The City of Dallas informally dedicated the VAUGHN BROTHERS ART PROJECT, which features images of musicians STEVIE RAY VAUGHN and JIMMIE VAUGHN, in the Fall of 2020. A celebration is planned at the site for March 20, 2021, if COVID restrictions allow.
The tribute, installed in Dallas' KIEST PARK, will be visible from Hampton Avenue at its location near Cliff Teen Court. The location was chosen because it was a gathering spot for Stevie Ray Vaughan's friends the day he died in a helicopter crash near East Troy, Wisconsin, at age 35, on August 27, 1990, and has served as a memorial spot since. Also killed in the crash were musician Eric Clapton's agent Bobby Brooks, bodyguard Nigel Browne, and assistant tour manager Colin Smythe
The memorial, designed by Spanish artist Casto Solano, consists of four corten steel framed screens with images of Stevie Ray and Jimmie Vaughan cut into the metal, with each panel showing images of the Vaughan Brothers' lives, including photos/stills of both brothers and their song lyrics
The City of Dallas paid $74,000 from 2006 bond funds, and friends and fans raised about $75,000, thanks to the efforts of former Oak Cliff resident Kirby Warnock. About $28,000 of that will be put into a maintenance fund for the work.
