Dallas police say a 40-year-old man is in custody after a shooting Thursday night in the Lakewood neighborhood that left a man wounded.
A little before 8 p.m., officers responded to a shooting call in the 7000 block of Gaston Avenue, near West Shore Drive. When officers arrived, police said they found one man had been shot in a parking lot at the location.
He was sent to a local hospital and was last listed in stable condition, according to police.
Clayton Matthews was arrested on an aggravated assault charge in connection with the shooting. Matthews remains in Dallas County custody, with his bail set at $100,000, according to jail records. It’s not clear if he has an attorney.
No other injuries were reported, police said. The shooting took place near Lakewood Presbyterian Church following the end of its parochial school’s annual Christmas program.
An altercation broke out between two adults on the walkway outside of the school’s gym, Rev. Brad Denton, the pastor of the church, said in a statement to parishioners, shared to WFAA. He added the shooting was of a private and personal nature and that the church doesn’t believe either party intended to harm any members of the student body or the church.
After the shooting, he said armed church personnel engaged and contained the attacker while community members tended to the victim, WFAA reported.
